SIU Carbondale Dental Hygiene Program Launches First White Coat Ceremony

CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Dental Hygiene Program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale has introduced a new academic tradition with its first white coat ceremony, marking a milestone for students entering clinical training.

The ceremony formally recognized students’ transition from classroom instruction to patient-centered care. Stacey McKinney, program director and associate professor, said the event represents more than the presentation of a white coat.

“It symbolizes commitment, responsibility and the transition to clinical practice,” McKinney said. “By donning the white coat, students accept the ethical standards, professionalism, compassion and lifelong learning that define the dental hygiene profession.”

She added that the white coat serves as a visible reminder of the trust patients and communities place in dental hygienists.

While other medical programs at SIU have long held white coat ceremonies, this is the first for the dental hygiene program. About 90 students across all levels participated. Program leaders said the event highlights a shared professional identity and the program’s commitment to equity.

Senior recognition

The ceremony also honored senior students, who received class pins as they near graduation. The pins mark the completion of their academic and clinical preparation and symbolize their transition into professional practice.

“The class pin is a lasting symbol of achievement and perseverance,” McKinney said. “It reflects the knowledge, skills and values developed throughout the program.”

The SIU dental hygiene Class of 2026 includes students from communities across Illinois, Missouri and Tennessee.

The event was held at Carterville High School. Officials from SIU’s dental hygiene and health professions programs, as well as the College of Health and Human Sciences, attended. Ultradent sponsored the ceremony.
