West Michigan Community Health Centers Secure $5.6 Million in Federal Funding for Comprehensive Care

Two community health centers in West Michigan are set to receive significant federal funding to improve healthcare access for local residents. Cherry Street Services’ Heart of the City Health Center in Grand Rapids will benefit from $4.6 million in support, while Muskegon Family Care in Muskegon Heights will receive nearly $1 million. The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and was announced by U.S. Representative Hilary Scholten.

Scholten highlighted that these funds aim to help underserved communities receive affordable and reliable healthcare. She stated, “Cherry Street Services’ Heart of the City Health Center and Muskegon Family Care provide critical primary care services, and I’m pleased to announce this well-deserved funding. Every West Michigander deserves access to quality, dependable health care, and these investments will help these health centers care for their neighbors at costs they can afford.”

The Heart of the City Health Center, located on Cherry Street SE, offers a wide range of services including primary care, dental care, behavioral health, vision services, pediatrics, and pharmacy support. Dental services at the center cover exams, cleanings, x-rays, restorative procedures such as fillings, crowns and dentures, and some extractions. Other offerings include counseling, vision care, well-child pediatric visits, and medication support for patients and the public.

Muskegon Family Care, situated on South Getty Street, focuses on providing accessible healthcare for people of all ages regardless of their financial situation. Their medical programs include primary care, immunizations, integrated pediatrics, and telehealth options. Dental care covers x-rays, oral exams, hygiene cleanings, restorative fillings and crowns, dentures, and emergency oral treatment. Additional services include behavioral health therapies, pharmacy discounts under the 340B Drug Discount Program, and optometry services such as diabetic eye exams.

Leaders at both health centers say this new funding will help them continue to deliver essential care to the community. The grants will allow increased access to dental treatments, primary medical care, behavioral health services, eye care, and affordable medication, improving health outcomes for residents of Grand Rapids and Muskegon Heights.
