CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A new bill expected this week could reshape how dental insurance operates in West Virginia.
Sen. Jason Barrett, a Republican from Berkeley County, plans to introduce the More for Your Smile legislation. The bill’s main feature is a dental loss ratio requirement, mandating that insurance companies spend at least 85% of premiums on patient care.
Hallie Mason, executive director of the West Virginia Dental Association, said many residents do not receive the coverage they expect. “Families and employers are paying premiums every month, yet patients face delays, denials, and confusing limits even when their dentist recommends care,” Mason said.
Mason added that some insurers may spend up to half of premiums on administrative costs and profits.
If passed by the state legislature and signed by Gov. Patrick Morrisey, West Virginia would become the third state after Massachusetts and North Dakota to enact a dental loss ratio law.
